Veteran theatre, film and TV star Tom Alter has passed away on Friday night at his residence in Mumbai. The Padma Shri actor, one-time sports journalist and writer was battling stage four skin cancer.

A statement released on behalf of his family said, “It is with sadness we announce the death of Tom Alter, actor, writer, director, Padma Shri, and our dear husband and father. Tom passed away Friday night at home with his family and close family members in attendance. We ask for their privacy to be respected at this time.”

Born in Mussoorie in year 1950, Tom Alter was a 3rd generation American in India, who studied at the Woodstock School in the Himalayas and briefly went to the Yale University in the USA. He returned to India in the early 70s.

In 1972, along with Benjamin Gilani and Phunsok Ladakhi, Tom Alter got enrolled in the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune.

Tom Alter's first released film was Ramanand Sagar's ‘Charas’ in 1976. Some of his notable films were ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi,’ ‘Junoon,’ ‘Kranti,’ and ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili.’
