In 1982, Pranab Mukherjee was made Finance Minister of India. However, after Indira Gandhi's assasination in 1984, Pranab left the party as he was not in favour of Rajiv Gandhi being made the next Prime Minister. Pranab thought he was the right successor to Indira.

Pranab da went on to form his own party, the Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress. However, he struggled to keep things afloat, and later merged it with Congress in 1989 after reaching a compromise with then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
