Waheeda Rehman, born on February 3, 1938, to a Deccani Muslim family in Chengalpet of present-day Tamil Nadu, India.
The actress was the youngest out of four daughters to father Mohammed Abdur Rehman and mother Mumtaz Begum.
Waheeda Rehman and her sisters were trained in Bharatanatyam in Chennai. When her relatives asked her father Mohammed Abdur Rehman, “Kya Musalman ladki ko nachaaoge?” (Will you make your Muslim daughter dance?) He replied, “Art is never bad. It’s the human being, who errs. How you conduct yourself is important.”
The actress studied in St. Joseph's Convent in Visakhapatnam when her father was posted there as a district commissioner in the then-Madras Presidency.
Rehman's father died in 1951 while she was thirteen. And her dream to become a doctor was no more a choice due to her family's circumstances. To help her family, Waheeda accepted movie offers that stemmed from her dancing abilities.
