From the age of two, Kim knew she was a girl. By the age of thirteen, she appeared on a German television current affairs show in which she discussed her medical gender transition. At fourteen, Petras appeared in a documentary and a talk show to get permission for early sex reassignment surgery at age sixteen, as Germany's earlier minimum age was eighteen.
