Pili Nalika keeps Tulunaadu’s Dasara tradition alive

Navratri celebrations in Mangaluru are never complete without a couple of energetic and vibrant performances of the Pili Nalike— the traditional tiger dance fest. In its sixth edition this year, the mega programme saw various teams in Kudla take centre stage with their best performances. Pili Nalike, which was held over the weekend, saw hundreds of onlookers watch this spectacular show of thumping percussion, awe-inspiring stunts and moves by the pilis. Nine local teams left the audience mesmerised and asking for more. The brainchild of Mithun Rai and Shiv Sharan Shetty, the highlight of this year’s Pili Nalike was that it introduced an insurance scheme for tiger dancers in the city. It was hailed as a welcome move.
