Eminent fashion designer Wendell Rodricks passed away on Wednesday evening due to a prolonged illness. He was a gay rights activist and Padma Shri awardee. Family sources said that the funeral is scheduled for Thursday, February 13, 2020. The 60-years-old designer is originally from Goa. He was awarded a Padma Shri in 2014 and was also accorded the Chevalier de l''Ordre des Arts Et Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 2015. Wendell has been credited to advocate the Kunbi saree, worn by the indigenous Kunbi tribal women of Goa. Rodricks was in the process of setting up a museum ‘Moda Goa Museum and Research Centre' for clothes and fashion in Goa through the ages. Rodricks was born in a Goan Catholic family and grew up in Mumbai. He began his career in fashion designing by using his savings to study fashion in Los Angeles and Paris. He was known for the inspired idea of resort wear and for encouraging eco-friendly fashion. Family sources confirmed to the Indian Express that Roderick died at his Colvale house in Panaji, Goa. A heart attack is believed to be the reason for his death.
