Ritu Kumar is an Indian fashion designer with multiple labels under her name, which include 'Ritu Kumar', 'Ri', 'Ritu Kumar Home' and 'LABEL, Ritu Kumar'. She began her designing career in 1969 in Kolkata. In the beginning, her only resources were four hand block printers and two tables. She eventually moved into the international market in the next two decades, opening branches in Paris, London and New York. In 2002, Kumar launched a sub-brand called 'LABEL, Ritu Kumar' with her son Amrish, which focuses on western wear. The brand took inspiration from traditional Indian designs, fusing it with western influence to create something unique. Since 1994, Ritu Kumar has been designing the wardrobes for the Miss India contestants who also represent India in international beauty pageants. The brand is known for its distinctive designs, good quality fabrics, Indo-western appeal, as well as for creating employment in underdeveloped areas. Ritu Kumar was awarded the Padma Shri Award in 2013 for her exceptional and distinguished service in the field of fashion, textile and craftsmanship; her company's annual turnover was estimated to be around ₹300 crores in 2019.
