Crostini

Crostini
1/8
Amidst the modish designer stores and showy restaurants of New Delhi's Hauz Khas Village, lies Crostini, an unpretentious little cafe inviting you to its fresh bakes and healthy brews. About 50 feet ahead of the Yodakin bookstore, Crostini is more than just a welcome space with an idyllic ambiance to read or work, and well, grab a delicious bite too.(Pics: Arunima Mazumdar)

Plain white-washed brick walls, slightly creaky antique wooden furniture, throw-pillows flung about carelessly on sink-in sofas pushed against the wall, humble flower pots placed in the corners, Vespa miniatures resting on the robust coffee table and interesting lamps hanging from an unscathed log of wood from the ceiling - all of these make the restaurant immensely likeable from the time you set foot into it. Eateries may promise you a low-cal burger or perhaps a low-carb milk shake but no one really bothers to delve into the specifications. Even the smoothies served in coffee and snack bars are nothing but a mix of flavour syrups and frozen fruits. That is when Crostini steps in to score all its 'healthy' brownie points. To begin with, they've unmistakably done away with the concept of maida (white refined flour). "All our breads, cakes and cookies are made of wheat flour," says owner Mitali Kalra who courageously gave up her successful career in banking to follow her passion, something that very few can muster. Next in line is the assortment of smoothies, shakes, soups and stews, not to mention, their bread too is baked in-house!(Pics: Arunima Mazumdar)

We started off with the cafe's trademark dish - a Crostini made of wheat bread, smeared with a layer of pesto and fresh tomato slices with cubes of mozzarella on top and paired it with one of the fruit smoothies from the menu. We ordered a Berry Blast, a delicious blend of blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, banana and yogurt, and a Peanut Butter smoothie that brings the goodness of apple, banana, and skim milk along with a dash of whey protein.(Pics: Arunima Mazumdar)
