Haider



Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Haider' is the screen adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy 'Hamlet', which was written sometime between 1599 and 1602. The play depicts Prince Hamlet and his revenge against his uncle, Claudius, who kills Hamlet's father in order to capture his throne and marry Hamlet's mother. The movie 'Haider', which stars Shahid Kapoor, Tabu and Kay Kay Menon in lead roles, is set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir conflicts and civilian disappearances. 'Haider' was the first Indian film to win the People's Choice Award at the Rome Film Festival. The movie also won the five National Awards - Best Male Playback Singer, Best Dialogue, Best choreography, Best Costume Design, and Best Music Direction.

Vishal Bhardwaj's 2006 movie 'Omkara' was also adapted from Shakespeare's play 'Othello', which is believed to be written in 1603. The story of the play revolves around the two central characters - Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army and his unfaithful and unscruplous junior officer. The movie stars Ajay Devgn in titular role and Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi in other roles.
