The engine has been indigenously-developed by Maruti's parent Suzuki, and has been in the works for several years. Maruti currently sells diesel cars with a 1,300cc engine that it makes under licence from Italy's Fiat. It also sources the diesel engine from Fiat and Tata's manufacturing joint venture in India.

Sources said Suzuki's new diesel engine, perhaps the smallest in this category, will be "very fuel efficient" and can give an output of nearly 30 km to a litre. This would make it an attractive offering for the price-conscious compact car buyers in India.

Kenichi Ayukawa, MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki, confirmed the development. "Yes, it will soon do duty on our cars." Asked to comment on the fuel efficiency, he said, "I cannot confirm 30km per litre, but yes, it will be closer to this."

The Celerio was launched by Maruti in February last year and clocks around 5,000 units monthly. Maruti had focused on the automatic market with the Celerio and this version accounts for around 40% of the model's sales. The petrol version of the model costs between Rs 3.9 lakh and Rs 4.96 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
