The engine has been indigenously-developed by Maruti's parent Suzuki, and has been in the works for several years. Maruti currently sells diesel cars with a 1,300cc engine that it makes under licence from Italy's Fiat. It also sources the diesel engine from Fiat and Tata's manufacturing joint venture in India.

Sources said Suzuki's new diesel engine, perhaps the smallest in this category, will be "very fuel efficient" and can give an output of nearly 30 km to a litre. This would make it an attractive offering for the price-conscious compact car buyers in India.
