Congress leader Digvijay Singh has made a pitch for a ‘major surgery’ in the party in wake of the disappointing results in Assembly polls in four states. The Congress lost power in Assam and Kerala and the alliance with DMK didn't work in its favour in Tamil Nadu. His remarks came on a day Congress president Sonia Gandhi said the party would introspect over the causes of the debacle in the assembly elections and work with ‘greater vigour’ for the service of the people.

Last five year saw women taking lead in all major struggles in the state - be it the historical Munnar struggle by Pengal Orumai, strike demanding better wage and rest hour by textile salesgirls, Nilpu Samaram demanding social justice for scheduled tribe led by C K Janu etc. However, when it comes to elections, women's representation to Assembly is a meagre 5.7 %. The 140 member Assembly has only eight women representatives, one seat higher than last year's figure. The state which is hailed for high literacy among women, 8 women MLAs cut a sorry figure.
