Gandhi on Wednesday claimed that the decision to demonetising Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes was taken after detailed deliberations and not in haste, while about Rs 12 lakh crore of the new notes have been deposited. To ease the cash crunch, the RBI also assured the steady supply of new notes into the system.

Property dealer Mahesh Shah, who had sensationally disclosed Rs 13,860 crore unaccounted income under the Centre's Income Declaration Scheme, might be staring at a maximum of three years in jail for providing false information. According to income tax source, providing false information under IDS is illegal and action might be taken against Shah for doing so. A highly placed source within the department, on condition of anonymity, said, "Under the Income Declaration Scheme, a person is supposed to declare his own money."
