Varanasi
Earlier known as 'Kashi' and 'Benares', Varanasi is situated on the banks of holy river Ganga. According to Hindu mythology, the city was founded by Lord Shiva. The archaeological evidences say that the city has a history dating back to 800 BCE. Tens of thousands of devotees from around the world visit Varanasi every year.
Ayodhya
Situated on the banks of the holy river Saryu in Uttar Pradesh, Ayodhya is the birthplace of Lord Rama. It also used to be the capital of the ancient Kosala Kingdom. It is believed that Gautama Buddha and Mahavira visited and lived in the city.
Pushkar
Situated on the shore of Pushkar Lake, there are various legends from Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata and the Puranic scriptures, which mention the Pushkar city. These days, the city is famous for its annual Pushkar Camel Fair.
Delhi
It is one of the oldest cities in India, which was built, destroyed and rebuilt several times. The city also remained one of the longest-serving capitals of several kingdoms due to its strategic locations. The ancient Indian literature like Mahabharata and some Buddhist texts mention about a city named Indraprastha. It was the capital of the kingdom led by the Pandavas. The modern historical research suggests that the Indraprastha was located in the region of present-day New Delhi, particularly the Old Fort area.
Gwalior
Known for its rich culture and magnificent palace, Gwalior is one of the oldest cities in central India. It was ruled by several dynasties and played an important role in the revolt of 1857.
