It took only eight hours for the Madhya Pradesh police and its Anti-terrorist squad (ATS) to chase and kill the eight Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) members after they escaped from Bhopal central jail illing a head constable and scaling wall of the so-called 'high-security' premises using bed sheets on Monday morning.

They were cornered and gunned down 10 km away from the prison in city outskirts in a joint operation of city police, counter terrorist group (CTG) and ATS team led by IPS officer Sanjeev Shami.

Their location was detected near Manikheda area under Gunga police station following information from local villagers. "When they were confronted by a few the villagers, they started pelting stones. Villagers mistook them as robbers and alerted the police. When they were asked to surrender, they opened fire forcing police to retaliate," said IG Yogesh Chaudhary who was part of the operation. Two policemen were also injured in the encounter which lasted for nearly an hour. They were carrying date and other food materials with them. Efforts are being made to trace identity of those who supported them in the jail break.

Among these - Zakir Hussein Sheikh, Mehboob Guddu and Amzad were involved in the October 2013- Khandwa jail break incident in which four other led by SIMI operatives - led by SIMI's MP chief Abu Faisal - had used iron bars to make way through Khandwa jail's bathroom wall and break free. They had used an iron rod to dig a hole in the toilet wall from where they escaped. They used jail bed-sheets to scale the 20-feet high boundary wall.
