Cyclone Gaja kills at least 10 in Tamil Nadu
1/32
At least 10 people have been killed as Cyclone Gaja unleashed heavy rains and winds in southern India. The severe storm uprooted hundreds of trees and electric poles and damaged homes. According to the government officials, more than 80,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas of Tamil Nadu. Thousands of fishermen have been warned to stay away from the sea. As a precautionary step, government has also closed down schools, colleges and other educational institutions. Members of Disaster Management team were deployed to remove fallen trees and poles from roads. Gaja is the second major storm to hit India's east coast in recent weeks. Cyclone Titli had battered Odisha state in October, killing at least two people. Storms regularly hit southern India between April and December. Last year, Cyclone Ockhi left nearly 250 people dead in the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
