The beginning of Ram Janmabhoomi and Babri Masjid dispute started in early 1850s when a communal riot occurred between Hindus and Muslims. For the first time Babri Masjid was attacked by a group of Hindus in the violence.

Since then, various Hindutva groups have staged demonstration and protest against the Babri Masjid. Their main demand was to get the possession of Babri Masjid, which they claim to be the birth place of Lord Rama. However, all their claims were refuted by the colonial government.

In 1949, the idols of Lord Rama and Sita were allegedly placed inside the Babri Masjid after reciting ‘Ramcharit Manas’ for nine consecutive days. This was performed by Digvijay Nath (Gorakhnath Math) and Akhil Bharatiya Ramayana Mahasabha.
