Local train services in Mumbai resumed for the general public after a gap of more than nine months. The Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal announced after the Maharashtra government made a proposal to resume services for all commuters. Mumbai local train is the lifeline for millions of people, who are living in city and surrounding towns. The services were closed due to coronavirus pandemic. In the beginning, the government allowed emergency staff, teaching, non-teaching staff, practising lawyers, women passengers and disabled people to travel by local trains. Now, the services are open for all. According to the Railway Ministry, the trains will be available in three time slots - from the start of the day's services to 7am; 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm; and 9:00 pm to the end of the day. On the first day, hundreds of passengers were fined for not wearing masks. Maharashtra is the worst hit state in the pandemic, where the death toll crossed 11 thousand mark.
