When Gandhiji visited Santiniketan, he addressed Rabindranath Tagore as ‘Namesthe Gurudev’. To this Rabindranath replied, ‘If I am Gurudev you are Mahatma.’ Henceforth, the prefix of ‘Mahatma’ is used before his name.

Gandhiji’s autobiography titled as An Autobiography of My Experiments with Truth was published in 1927. HarperCollins publishers acknowledged it as one of the '100 Most Important Spiritual Books of the 20th Century' in the year 1999.

Gandhiji enjoyed walking. On one occasion, he said, “is justly called the prince of exercises." He began taking pleasure in high school. Even as a law student in London, he preferred walking 10 miles a day to save money. During ‘Salt March’ in 1930, at age of 60, he walked 241 miles from his ashram to the sea at Dandi.

Gandhiji was known for his punctuality. Just before he was assassinated, he was upset for being ten minutes late to a regular prayer meeting. He was assassinated on 30th January, 1948. The Sri Lankan radio delayed the broadcast programme for twenty-four hours. The Nobel Committee decided not to award the Peace Prize for that year as Gandhiji was nominated for the same.

Indians celebrate Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October, which is a national holiday marked on the occasion of the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi—Father of the Nation. The United Nations General Assembly has stated that 2nd October will also be celebrated as the ‘International Day of Non-Violence’.
