The toll plaza at Sirhaul on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway is gone, but it has left behind a traffic nightmare. Lakhs of commuters got stranded in their vehicles for several hours.

The Punjab and Haryana high court has ordered that the Delhi-Gurgaon expressway be eight-laned consistently; at present, it expands to 32 lanes where the toll plaza used to be.

What caused the jam?Expressway reduced from 32 lanes to eight in sirhaul (Four lanes on each carriageway) to keep width consistent with rest of the road. No coordination between e-way operator, NHAI and police.

Why was it done?Because once sirhaul toll plaza is fully razed, eight lanes will be used for the main Expressway and rest are likely to be redesigned as service roads/exits.
