Canada
This was the first country outside Europe, which ligalised the same-sex marriage. On February 1, 2005, The Civil Marriage Act was introduced by former Prime Minister Paul Martin’s Liberal minority. It was passed by the House of Commons on June 25, 2005, by the Senate on July 19, 2005, and it received royal assent the following day.

Portugal
In February 2010, a bill was passed by the Assembly of the Republic (the Portuguese Parliament) to legalise the same-sex marriage. However, the bill was declared legally valid by the Portuguese Constitutional Court in April 2010. President Aníbal Cavaco Silva ratified the law and Portugal became the sixth country in Europe and the eighth country in the world to allow same-sex marriage nationwide.
