A helicopter from the USS Sampson brought the corpses to Pangkalan Bun, the town nearest to the site. They were unloaded and driven off in ambulances.Rescuers hope the fuselage if intact will contain the remains of many of the nearly 150 passengers and crew still missing. The wreckage will be key to explaining what might have caused Flight 8501 to go down.

Navy spokesperson Manahan Simorangkir said that the warship Bung Tomo recovered 40 bodies and the number is increasing.

An AirAsia flight carrying 155 people from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday, officials in the region and the budget carrier said.

Mustofa said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact.Indonesian media said 149 Indonesians, three people from Korea, and one each from Singapore, Britain and Malaysia were on board. Among the passengers, 138 were adults, 16 children and a baby.

The flight had been due in Singapore at 8:30 a.m. Singapore time (0030 GMT). The Singapore airport said on its website the status of the flight was "delayed".The incident comes at the end of a disastrous year for Malaysia's airlines.
