The National Institute for Space Research (INPE), the space agency of Brazil, recorded the highest number of wildfires in the Amazon. The agency said nearly 73,000 fires were reported between January and August, compared with 39,759 in all of 2018. That is the highest number of forest fires for any year since 2013 and follows two years of declines. Experts claimed deforestation is the main reason for the surging number of fires in Brazil. "What we are seeing is a consequence of the increase in deforestation seen in recent figures," said Ricardo Mello of WWF's Amazon Program. A few days ago, thick smoke had blanketed several cities, which caused air pollution and reduced visibility. Activists lambasted Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for his anti-environment rhetoric. According to them, Bolsonaro's appeasement politics is emboldening loggers and miners. He also sacked the head of the INPE when agency's data showed a surge in deforestation in recent months. Brazil leads the region in forest fires this year, according to the INPE data that is collected via satellite and updated in real-time. Venezuela ranked second with 26,453 fires and Bolivia with 16,101. Germany and Norway have also expressed their displeasure over Brazil's lukewarm response in the fight against deforestation.
