Nearly 300 protesters arrested in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong police fired pepper pellets and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the protesters in the former British colony. More than 240 protesters were arrested as the anti-China demonstrations revived following the proposal of national security legislation. As the tensions soared, a large number of police personnel were deployed around Hong Kong's Legislative Council. The protesters had planned to organise a demonstration outside the building of the Legislative Council as a bill was due to be debated that would criminalise disrespect of the Chinese national anthem. Thousands of protesters took to streets to stage their protest against the 'interference' of China in the internal matters of Hong Kong. "Although you’re afraid inside your heart, you need to speak out," said Chang, 29, a clerk and protester dressed in black with a helmet respirator and goggles in her backpack.
