Japan marks 10th anniversary of Fukushima disaster
1/19

Japan marked the 10th anniversary of Fukushima disaster with silence, prayers and anti-nuclear protests. Ten years ago, the massive earthquake and tsunami wreaked havoc in Japan that killed about 20,000 people. The deadly disaster destroyed several towns and triggered nuclear meltdowns in Fukushima. Huge waves triggered by the 9.0-magnitude quake struck the northeastern coast, disrupting the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant and forcing more than 150,000 residence to flee as radiation spewed into the air. The survivors of the tragedy have been struggling to overcome the grief of losing families since 2011. Atsushi, a restaurant owner, prayed to his mother killed by the waves. "I want to tell my mother that my children, who were all close to her, are doing well. I came here to thank her that our family is living safely," said Niizuma, 47.
