Kiwi star Brendon McCullum has an uncanny habit of scoring big in the opening match of a tournament. The one innings that comes to mind is his breathtaking 158 for Kolkata Knight Riders against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the inaugural match of the 2008 Indian Premier League.

While his unbeaten 83 against Faisalabad Wolves in the opening match of the Champions League T20 tournament wasn't as brutal, it paved the way for a comfortable eight-wicket victory for Otago Volts at the PCA stadium on Tuesday.

Faisalabad looked to be in the game when they picked up two early wickets, getting rid of openers Neil Broom and Hamish Rutherford, with just 41 on the board. But McCullum (83 off 65 balls, 9x4, 2x6) and his deputy Derek de Brooder (30 off 28 balls, 2x4, 1x6) snuffed out any hopes the Pakistani side harboured with a match-winning, unbroken 101-run stand that sealed the game.

Earlier, Misbah-ul-haq once again proved to be the savior for his side. Whether it's Tests, One-dayers or T20 cricket, Misbah is his side's official fire-fighter. Though he wasn't in a green jersey this time around, his job was the same - to save the tottering Faisalabad Wolves' innings. By the time Misbah arrived at the crease, the Wolves had lost three quick wickets with just 34 runs on the board and the run-rate too wasn't that great.

Misbah (46 off 34 balls, 4x4, 3x6) played a whirlwind knock, giving a fitting riposte to detractors who have often criticized him for being slow, and added 61 runs for the fourth wicket with Khurram Shehzad (27 off 36 balls, 3x4).
