For close to six hours after the start of play, till around until around 3.30 pm, the second Test between India and the West Indies wore the look of any other First Class match with the only difference being a very impatient crowd waiting for some excitement to seep in.

The next 90 minutes made it appear as if it was the match of the century. Only when Sachin Tendulkar, the man India just can't get enough of, walked into bat, did the excitement reach boiling point at the Wankhede here on Thursday afternoon.

Until that diminutive genius stepped out to do what he does best, the first two sessions of play saw yet another indisciplined batting display from West Indies and yet another spin-burst from the Pragyan Ojha-R Ashwin combination, on a track that aided both bounce and spin.

Such has been the identity that the West Indies have carved for themselves in terms of extreme batting malfunctions that the Indian camp didn't blink in allowing them the opportunity to bat first, despite winning the toss. And Darren Sammy's men returned the favour, losing their first three wickets under 100 runs and the last seven wickets for just 42 runs. The 61-run stand between Kieran Powell - dropped by Ashwin in the slips on 21 - and Marlon Samuels remained the highest partnership for the West Indies.

Ojha dedicated his five-wicket haul to Tendulkar, playing his final Test, but even the left-arm-spinner would know he didn't really have to toil to get past the suicidal Caribbean batsmen. As for Ashwin, he'd have ended up with four and not three wickets had Murali Vijay not dropped a sitter at slip off Denesh Ramdin.
