New Zealand has already beaten tournament favourites India and Australia, while 2009 champion Pakistan has just two points from its victory over Bangladesh after also losing to India. Pakistan, notorious to slip in run-chases, scored nearly half of the required runs in the first 10 overs before its batsmen let the game slip away. Ahmed Shehzad (30), Umar Akmal (24) and captain Shahid Afridi (19), who was dropped off the first ball, couldn't build any real momentum as New Zealand kept taking wickets in reply.

Earlier, Guptill hit 10 fours and three sixes as he dominated a Pakistan pace attack that was missing left-arm fast bowler Wahab Riaz, who was rested following a head injury. Guptill perfectly paced the innings after captain Williamson won his third successive toss and opted to bat. He added 62 with Williamson off 44 balls before Guptill chopped fast bowler Mohammad Sami's delivery back onto his stumps in the 15th over.
