For India, Sebastian Vettel was always special. On Sunday, India became really special for Sebastian Vettel. After Brazil (2010 and 2012) and Japan (2011), India became the third country to witness his coronation as the World Driver's Champion — his fourth successive crown making the 26-year-old German the youngest quadruple champ in the sport.

"My engineer Rocky was telling me to do the usual procedure but I said, 'I am going to have some fun.' It was a great crowd in front of the main Grandstand and I tried to entertain them," a visibly emotional Vettel later, smug in the knowledge that he had extended his championship lead to an unassailable 115 points over second-placed Fernando Alonso in the season's standings.

But the race was anything but straightforward for pole-sitter Vettel. Red Bull's strategy of going with 'soft' tyres meant Vettel had to pit by the third lap and slipped down to 17th by Lap Four. Ferrari's Alonso headed the field in the meantime after overtaking both the Mercedes cars in the first lap.

Vettel's teammate Mark Webber waited for his time and after Felipe Massa also changed his 'soft' tyres moved into the lead. Meanwhile, the world champion fought back from the back of the field, setting a succession of fastest laps in the process, while also negating Webber's strategy. By Lap 21, Vettel was already second behind Webber.
