It was truly an Olympics like never before! The number of 'out' competitors at Tokyo was higher than the previous Games and so was the number of medal winners. At least 182 publicly out LGBTQ+ athletes competed in Tokyo, more than triple the number who participated at the 2016 Rio Games. The 'team LGBTQ+' scored a record medal haul in 2020! Yes, you read that right. They won 32 medals: 11 gold, 12 silver and 9 bronze. Take a look at a few of the stars below.
Team Venezuela's Yulimar Rojas won the gold medal in the women's triple jump. She even set a new world record. Rojas jumped 15.67 metres and broke the previous women's triple jump world record of 15.50 metres set by Ukraine’s Inessa Kravets in 1995.
Raven Saunders has been a viral sensation this Olympics. Her green and purple hair, the eye-catching collection of masks, inspired by the Marvel Comics character the Hulk and the Joker from the Batman franchise were already a hit among the netizens. Then came her silver win for Team USA in the women's shot put and her podium demonstration. As medallists posed for photos, Saunders raised her arms and crossed them into an X shape. The medal winner said in reports that it represented "the intersection of where all people who are oppressed meet."
Ally Carda represented Team USA at the 2020 Summer Olympics and won a silver medal in softball.
Italian archer Lucilla Boari came out after having defeated American Mackenzie Brown to win the bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, becoming the first Italian woman to medal in the sport.
