It was a memorable Games like no other! The 2020 Tokyo Paralympics proved to be a dynamic event with athletes giving their best performances to clinch medals. Records were broken, medals were won and some were left disappointed for not being able to make it to the glorious podium finish. But all in all, it was a memorable journey that will stay with sports fans forever. India won 19 medals, including five gold medals at the Games. The 2020 Paralympics ended a 13-day run in a colourful, circus-like ceremony at the National Stadium overseen by Crown Prince Akishino, the brother of Emperor Naruhito. It was an unprecedented Paralympics, postponed for a year. The closing ceremony was entitled, "Harmonious Cacophony." The theme was reportedly described by organisers as a "world inspired by the Paralympics, one where differences shine." Just like the Tokyo Olympics, the Paralympics were held without an audience. Only a few thousand school children were allowed into some Paralympic venues. The closing ceremony celebrated youth culture with performances that included BMX biking, roller skating, choirs of children and break-dancing. The evening was captured in vibrant photos. Avani Lekhara led the Indian contingent at the closing ceremony. As we bid farewell to the Tokyo Paralympics, athletes will now prepare themselves for Paris, the Games will be held in 2024.
