All about August's blue supermoon
We are blessed with two full moons this month. August's cosmic calendar kickstarted with the Sturgeon Moon, the first full moon of the month on August 1, 2023.
For lunar lovers, this month will have a second full moon and it will be both a blue moon and a supermoon, rising on August 30.
Each month, the Moon passes through the point closest to Earth and the point farthest from Earth. When the Moon is at or near its closest point to Earth at the same time as it is full, it is called a 'supermoon.' During this celestial event, because the moon is a bit closer to us than usual, it appears especially large and bright in the sky.
A blue moon is the term for when we see the full moon twice in a single month. It is worth noting that blue moons are rare occurrences that occur every two and three years on average. The last blue moon was seen in August 2021.
