Ganesh Chaturthi 2023: History, significance and celebration
Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganeshotsav, is here. The observance marks the birth of Lord Ganesha. Usually recognised as the elephant-head god, Lord Ganesha is associated with prosperity, wisdom and good fortune.
The festival sees elaborate rituals, vibrant decorations and enthusiastic celebrations that span several days. Every year, the festival falls on the Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month, which on the Gregorian calendar comes in August or September.
Ganesh Chaturthi 2023 begins on September 19 at 11:02 am, with devotees bringing idols of the deity to their homes and ends on September 28 with the Ganesh visarjan.
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati, in the absence of her husband Lord Shiva, created Ganesha from sandalwood and appointed him to guard her home's entrance while she bathed. Upon Shiva's return, he encountered Ganesha blocking his way. Enraged after repeated failed attempts, Shiva severed Ganesha's head from his body.
