A rare spectacle of northern lights brightened up the night sky in Vancouver, Canada, leaving viewers mesmerised.

Skywatchers were quick to spot and capture the stunning phenomenon before sharing the pictures on social media.

According to reports, the peak aurora activity occurred for about half an hour, late at night before the light of the rising moon began to weaken the display.

The snaps show the night sky in stunning hues of pink, purple and green. The lights were visible with high auroral activity.
