October 2023 celestial events: Solar eclipse, Full Moon, meteor showers and more
This year's Supermoon bonanza may be behind us, but the sky has a host of stargazing treats to offer this October. Each week is slated to feature a different astronomical event, ranging from meteor showers to unique eclipses.
The first major meteor shower to look out for this month would be the Draconids meteor shower. Draconids are a historically milder display with up to ten meteors per hour under ideal conditions at peak. The celestial event will be at its peak after sunset on October 8 and the viewing conditions are favourable as it will coincide with a 19 percent illuminated waning crescent moon.
The new Moon on October 14 will set the stage for the annular solar eclipse, a rare event.
On October 14, the Sun, Moon and Earth will align to create a solar eclipse. Unlike a total solar eclipse when the Moon completely blocks the Sun, this will be an annular solar eclipse, meaning a halo of sunlight around the Moon, giving the celestial occurrence the nickname of a 'ring of fire' eclipse.
