Manorama was known for her versatility and commitment to acting. She had a long and eventful career—close to six decades in Tamil cinema. The actress had excelled in comedy. With her adaptability and versatility, she emerged as one of the best character actors. Manorama, also lovingly called Aachi, has appeared in more than 1000 movies, 5000 stage performances and television series until 2015. The actress was a recipient of the Kalaimamani award. In 2002, the Government of India awarded Manorama the Padma Shri for her contribution to the arts. She received National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the movie 'Pudhiya Padhai' (1989) and Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award – South (1995).
Manorama was born to Kasiyappan Kilakudaiyar and Ramamirtham in Mannargudi, Tamil Nadu. Her mother brought her up by working as a maid. The actress mentioned indebtedness to her mother through roles in movies that resemble her own mother.
Manorama's family moved to Pallathur near Karaikudi due to poverty. While in Pallathur, her mother started vomiting blood, which forced Manorama to start working as a maid. She had to drop out of school at the age of eleven.
When a drama troupe came to Pallathur, Manorama got a small part. But was suddenly dropped out due to her inability to sing. The troupe was looking for an artist who could act and sing. The drama troupe decided to give her this role in the drama titled 'Andhaman Kadhali.' Hence, her acting career began at the age of twelve.
The actress was rechristened Manorama by one of her dramas' director Thiruvengadam and harmonist Thiayagarajan.
