Nargis was born as Fatima Rashid on June 1, 1929, in Allahabad to the renowned classical singer, Jaddanbai and her father Ustaad Irshad Meer Khan belonged to an affluent family of Rawalpindi. Nargis had two brothers, Anwar Hussain and Akhtar Hussain.
Nargis made her debut at the age of four in a film 'Talashe Haq', produced by her mother, Jaddanbai. She was christened as Baby Nargis in the film's credits. Nargis and her brother Anwar Hussain followed their mother's footsteps and began their career in acting.
Young Nargis was a tomboy who loved playing badminton and cricket. However, her interest in acting began while she was in plays at her school Queen Mary’s.
Nargis was a happy, carefree girl with lots of friends, but it didn't last long. Even the principal of the school lectured her on the evil influence of films. The principal feared that Nargis would besmirch the name of the school.
Nargis appeared in several films after her debut in the 1935 film 'Talashe Haq'. At the age of fourteen, she appeared in Mehboob Khan's 'Taqdeer', opposite Motilal in 1943. Not only the film was a box office success, but also Nargis was profoundly praised for her performance. Filmindia referred to her as 'an excellent debut'.
