Ashok Kumar was the lead actor with Himanshu's wife Devika Rani in 1936 movie 'Jeevan Naiya'. The director Franz Osten didn't think Ashok Kumar had the good looks needed for an actor. It was an era when actors concealed their real identities behind screen names, and that's how Kumudlal was given the screen name Ashok Kumar.
