Vyjayanthimala was born on August 13, 1936, to Mandyam Dhati Raman and Vasundhara Devi in Triplicane, Chennai. However, the actress was raised primarily by her grandmother, Yadugiri Devi.
Vyjayanthimala's mother Vasundhara Devi was an Indian film actress, trained Bharathanatyam dancer and Carnatic singer.
For almost two decades, the actress ruled Indian cinema. Vyjayanthimala is also a trained Bharatnatyam dancer, a Carnatic singer like her mother.
Vyjayanthimala went to Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Presentation Convent, Church Park, Chennai. She learned Bharata Natyam from Guru Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai and Carnatic music from Manakkal Sivaraja Iyer. At the age of seven, Vyjayanthimala was selected to perform a classical Indian dance for Pope Pius XII in 1940 at Vatican City while her mother was sitting in the audience.
Vyjayanthimala made her debut at the age of fifteen in the Tamil movie Vaazhkai (1949), which was remade in Telugu as Jeevitham (1950), and in Hindi as Bahar (1951).
