Tagore is related to the independence struggle poets and artists Rabindranath Tagore and Abanindranath Tagore through her great grandfather Gaganendranath Tagore. Sharmila Tagore not only has paternal ties with the Laureate but also maternal. Her father Gitindranath was the grandson of noted painter Gaganendranath Tagore, whose own father Gunendranath had been a first cousin of the laureate. However, her maternal ties with Rabindranath Tagore comes from her maternal grandmother, Latika Barua (née Tagore), who was the granddaughter of Rabindranath Tagore's brother, Dwijendranath Tagore.
