Jeetendra, whose real name was Ravi Kapoor, was born on April 7, 1942, to Amarnath and Krishna Kapoor in a Punjabi Khatri family in Amritsar, Punjab.

Ravi Kapoor aka Jeetendra’s family was in the business of supplying imitation jewellery to the film industry. Here's a rare picture from his past with mother Krishna Kapoor and brother Prasan Kapoor.

The actor attended St. Sebastian's Goan High School in Mumbai with his friend Rajesh Khanna. Jeetendra did his further education from Siddharth College in Mumbai.

Initially, Rajesh Khanna helped Jeetendra with acting before going for the screen test. During one of his visits, while supplying jewellery to V. Shantaram, he requested the director to give him a break. However, V. Shantaram noticed Jeetendra closely on the set of ‘Sehra’ (1963), where he was a junior artist. The director was amazed that a Punjabi boy could speak such fluent Marathi so finally Jeetendra landed a lead role in V. Shantaram's movie ‘Geet Gaya Patharon Ne’ (1964) opposite Rajshree. Jeetendra gives credit to director V Shantaram's daughter Rajshree for making him lose his inhibitions. The actor remembers that she would drop in at his little house and take him out to movies.
