Pair of Sambar deer lounge in the company of crocodiles in the Byculla zoo, Mumbai. The crocodiles and the deer have been sharing the same habitat peacefully for many years. “While the deer were born in the zoo, the crocodiles were brought in when they were very young,” informs Sanjay Tripathi, the director of the zoo. There has been no instance of any predatory attack by the crocodiles on the deer. “There is plenty of fish in the pond for the crocodiles; the keepers also feed them fish,” says Tripathi.
