Probably the most infamous tragedy in sport happened at Munich Olympics when the members of Black September, a splinter group of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, attacked the campus where Israeli athletes were staying. After killing a weightlifter and a wrestling coach, the Black September held nine athletes hostage and asked for the release of 200 prisoners from Israel Jail. After a day of negotiations, the athletes were taken to a German military airport where German police snipers opened fire, prompting a gun battle which left all nine hostages dead.
