
The para-athletes from India produced some stunning performances in Tokyo to give the country its best-ever medal haul. India won a total of 19 medals with five gold, eight silver and size bronze medals at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. While we celebrate the massive achievement, one cannot ignore but notice a coincidence— for the Rio Paralympics, India sent 19 athletes and to mark the end of the Tokyo Paralympics, the country won 19 medals! This was the best-ever showing for India at the Paralympic Games, bettering its previous best of four medals at the 2016 Rio Games. At the Tokyo Paralympics, India discovered its new star, Avani Lekhara who won not one but two medals at the event. The teenage shooter gave us a great start winning the country's first gold at this edition of the Games. Her achievement made her the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympics. But Avani didn't stop there. The shooter went on to claim the 50m Rifle 3 Position SH1 bronze to add to her unprecedented gold.

Sumit Antil smashed the world record at Tokyo not once, but thrice. He threw 66.95m in his first attempt to set the new world record, before bettering it with his second throw. The javelin thrower remained on top of the points table with a stunning 68.55m throw in his fifth attempt that led him to climb to the top of the podium, winning gold.

The country had a lot of expectations from star para-athlete Devendra Jhajharia and he did not disappoint. The Javelin thrower returned home winning a silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. He clinched silver with a personal best throw of 64.35.

Archer Harvinder Singh won a bronze medal in the men's individual recurve event at this year's Paralympics. His victory also made him the first Indian to win a medal in archery at the Paralympics.
