Super Blue Moon lights up the night sky across the world
The end of August delivered a rare celestial event to skywatchers in the form of a second full Moon. The August 30 full Moon was a special one too, the unification of a supermoon and a Blue Moon, a 'Super Blue Moon.'
It was extra special for the skygazers in India, as the rare celestial occurrence was on the same day as Raksha Bandhan. Rakhi is celebrated on the Purnima of the month of Shravan and the rare trifecta of astronomical events doubled the joy for this year's festivity.
The visuals of a Super Blue Moon from all around the world were indeed a spectacular sight. Pictures of the celestial event went viral on social media.
A Supermoon occurs when the Moon passes through its perigee, or the point that takes it closest to Earth during its elliptical orbit. This makes the Moon look bigger compared to when it is at its furthest point and a touch brighter.
