The La Tomatina festival's origins remain murky. Allegedly stemming from a 1945 Bunol street brawl where tomatoes became weapons, this impromptu skirmish evolved into an annual world-renowned food fight.

Officially recognised in 1952, the city council assumed La Tomatina's organisation by 1980. Now, the annual event draws over 30,000 attendees, celebrating with spirited tomato-throwing.

A popular tale suggests a poorly-performing singer at a fest led the disappointed crowd to hurl produce from nearby vendor carts onto the stage.

Amidst Spain's turbulent 1940s under Franco, a tale arose of Bunol residents pelting civic leaders with tomatoes. However, given prevalent food rationing, this story leans more towards myth than reality.
